US stocks rose sharply on Friday on a report showing faster-than-expected third-quarter economic growth as investors showed little concern over news that Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff was charged with perjury and other crimes.

A 24 percent rise in Microsoft Corp.'s earnings also heartened investors despite a disappointing revenue outlook.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 98.06 points, or 0.96 percent, at 10,328.01. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 10.83 points, or 0.92 percent, at 1,189.73. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 13.34 points, or 0.65 percent, at 2,077.15.
